“S” Warm-up Drill

“S” Warm-up Drill

Hockey Drills, Individual Skill Drills, Neutral Zone, Passing & Timing, Team Skill Drills, Warm-Up
Use this Hockey Warm-up Drill to get everyone moving at the beginning of your practice! This is a great little high-speed hockey warm-up drill that incorporates many different elements of the game, including skating, passing, and shooting. I typically have my defensemen acting as the passers, since that neutral zone "d-to-d" pass is something they will need to perform over and over in games. Make sure to push those defensemen to make quick, hard, stick-to-stick passes to each other, and then fire that cross-ice pass hard and accurately. "S" Warm-up Drill 1. Forwards line up in the corner, two defensemen on each blue line 2. On whistle, first forward in each line passes out to the near defenseman 3. Defensemen execute D to D passes while forward skates the "S"…

Motivate Players with Hockey Shooting Drills

Coaches' Corner, Philosophy
During the course of a practice, it is not uncommon for players to get uninterested and become detached, especially at younger ages while working on boring skills like technical skating. Adding Hockey Shooting Drills into the mix is a wonderful way to liven up your practice and keep your players motivated and up beat. High tempo shooting drills can also help spark some competition and mentally rejuvenate your players during longer practices. When working with Hockey Shooting Drills, I try to implement a few key points that help my players to get the most benefit possible: 1. Make sure your players keep their feet in motion while shooting, this is called shooting in stride. Many players slow down and glide just before shooting, not only does this affirm to the…

Man in the Box Drill

Man in the Box Drill

1 on 1's, 2 on 2's, 2 on 1's, 3 on 2's, Hockey Drills, Team Skill Drills
Man in the Box 1 on 1 Drill This is another one of my favorite 1 on 1 hockey drills. The set-up is very simple, but there are SO MANY important concepts that can be worked on... it is VERY effective! Don't let your defensemen complain that the drill isn't fair––by the end of the season, EVERY defenseman should be able to keep up with the forwards. They'll have to do this in the games... might as well work on it in practice!! You can also do this same drill with a 2 on 1, just start two lines from the corner. Same rules still apply. Here's the diagram: Man in the Box 1. (F) starts in corner with puck - one skate behind the line! 2. (D) starts in…

The inside mohawk is a very versatile power skating maneuver. Here are a few simple drills to work on it. The Mohawk can be used while shooting, deking, pivoting, slipping checks... the options are limitless. Players who become proficient with the mohawk will find themselves performing it instinctively in games. Here's the diagram and explanations for the Mohawk Square Drill. Click Here for the Snake Drill mentioned in the video. Mohawk Square 1. Players start on the boards, about half way between the two cones 2. On the whistle, players skate around the square, executing a mohawk around each cone 3. After a few times through, go the other direction Note: Once the players can execute the move well, put a puck on their sticks and have them do a…

Center Lag Timing Drill

Center Lag Timing Drill

Hockey Drills, Individual Skill Drills, Passing & Timing
The Center Lag Timing Drill Timing in hockey is a skill that requires not only physical ability, but mental ability as well. It is not uncommon to see young players buzzing around in practices or games - they appear to only have one speed: FULL SPEED. Since they're working hard, they think they're doing a good job... In reality, it is the player who arrives in the right spot, at the right time, with speed that will be the most effective. Teach your players to pass to designated receiving areas, not necessarily to players. The responsibility lies with the receiver to make the play work. The receiver must select the proper route to the receiving zone so that he or she arrives on time, with speed. He or she must…
