Shooting: EZ Goal Review

Coaches' Corner, Hockey Equipment, Off-ice Training, Skills, Useful Products
The EZ Goal and Backstop combo is a durable, versatile, and inexpensive way work on your shot from home! One of the highest priorities in my Home Hockey Training Center was to have a solid shooting station. The first step is to have a good goal that you can shoot real pucks at. I chose the EZ Goal and Backstop because it is a full sized, durable, and portable piece of equipment. The design is very cool, and it can actually fold up for easy storage. Assembling the EZ Goal frame was very simple. It took me about 35 minutes to build both the net and backstop. Most of it snaps together with spring-loaded pins. The few tools that were needed actually came with the net (other than a phillips…

Spice Figure 8 Passing Drill

Spice Figure 8 Passing Drill

Hockey Drills, Individual Skill Drills, Neutral Zone, Passing & Timing, Regroups, Shooting, Skating & Agility, Team Skill Drills, Team Systems Drills
Here's Another One of my Favorite Hockey Passing Drills I love this hockey passing drill because it just flows well––especially when you have the right group of players for it. At it's best, this is a quick-paced, "tic-tac-toe" type of drill. However, if you have the wrong group of players, this drill will grind to a halt pretty quickly. So, just make sure your players are advanced enough before attempting this one! Here's the diagram and explanation: Spice Figure 8 Passing Drill 1. On the whistle, one (F) from each line diagonally across from each other goes. 2. Each (F) takes a few steps forward, then passes to the far (D). 3. The defensemen make a few "D to D" passes, then hit the (F) as he power turns around…

3 Man Weave

Hockey Drills, Individual Skill Drills, Offensive Zone, Passing & Timing, Team Skill Drills
The 3 Man Weave is a Simple, but Highly Effective Hockey Passing Drill! Use the 3 Man Weave to teach and reinforce key concepts like timing, support, and offensive zone triangulation. As skill progresses, increase the demand on the players. I like to insist that all my lines are able to get in three stick-to-stick passes before the far blue line, then a controlled attack on net. Here's the diagram: 3 Man Weave 1. On whistle, center passes to one of the two wingers, who is cutting through the middle for a pass. 2. After making the pass, the passer loops in behind the receiver, providing back-side support, then explodes up ice to become the front side option for the 3rd player. 3. Receiver picks up the pass, then head…

3 Shooter, Rebound and Recovery

3 Shooter, Rebound and Recovery

Goalie, Hockey Drills, Individual Skill Drills
The 3 Shooter, Rebound and Recovery Drill is a great way for players to work on their shots, while goalies work on their movement! This is a great, simple, goalie drill. It allows your shooters to work on their shots while the goalie works on his/her movement around the crease, angles and rebound recovery. Here's the diagram and explanation: 3 Shooter, Rebound and Recovery Drill: 1. Goalie in the net, three shooters set up as shown 2. Shooter 1 shoots low glove side. Goalie tries to kick rebound into the corner, then FOLLOWS his rebound and squares up to Shooter 2 3. Shooter 2 shoots anywhere. Goalie makes the save and stays square to the rebound, wherever it goes. 4. Goalie Squares back up to Shooter 1, and this time…
