Check out this Slide Board Designed Specifically for Goalies! Every now and then I come across a hockey training product that just makes me go "wow!" That's what happened when I first saw the X-Goalie Crease Slideboard from XHOCKEYPRODUCTS. Now, I'm admittedly NOT a goalie guy. But it's not hard to tell when something is going to be beneficial for an athlete. Watch the videos I've included in this post, and check out how closely this product allows the goalies to mimic their on-ice movements. Incredible! Here are a few of the features you should know about: Regulation-size Crease The X-Goalie Crease Slideboard features an NHL regulation goalie crease that utilizes Fan-tastic Sports technology along with the "ProHybrid Visual Lead Position System." Stickhandling: Swedish Wooden Ball Review

Coaches' Corner, Hockey Drills, Hockey Equipment, Individual Skill Drills, Individual Skills, Off-ice Training, Puckhandling, Skills, Stickhandling, Useful Products
The Swedish Wooden Ball is the "Speed Bag" of Hockey Stickhandling In most areas of athletic development there are drills and products to work on raw strength, and there are drills and products designed to work on speed and agility. Think of the difference between a boxer punching the heavy bag vs. the speed bag, or the difference between squats and sprints. Well, stickhandling is no different. We use different pucks, balls, and other training tools to work on different aspects of stickhandling skill requirements, in an attempt to put together a "complete development package" that will help the athlete to perform at an optimal level. Heavier pucks and balls will develop wrist and forearm strength, while lighter balls will develop faster hands, and quicker reaction speed. Both types of…

Strength Training Periodization for Hockey

Coaches' Corner, Off-ice Training, Useful Products
Use periodization as you structure your off-ice training program to avoid hitting plateaus, and to increase your gains throughout the entire year! A well-structured strength and conditioning program should not only develop sport-specific muscle groups and energy systems, but should also incorporate various forms of periodization to keep the athlete progressing both during the off-season and in-season. The S3 Formula is designed to do just that. The program develops the primary muscle groups used in hockey, and periodizes the workouts on both a macro and micro level... meaning "periodization within periodization." Athletes who follow the program faithfully see consistent gains in Speed, Strength, and Size all year long––whether during the off-season or in-season! Use this information to your advantage (very few of your opponents know about this stuff!), and make…

Off-ice Hockey Agility Drill

Off-ice Training, Speed
The Dot Drill is One of my Staple Off-Ice Agility Drills The Dot Drill is one of the most effective off-ice hockey agility drills I’ve ever seen. This drill is easy and inexpensive to set up, and only takes about a minute of the athlete’s time each day – so there are no excuses not to do it! Remember, the dots should be placed in a 2′ x 3′ rectangle, with one dot in the middle. Each dot should be about 5″ in diameter. You can spray paint the dots onto your garage or basement floor, or onto an old piece of carpet. You could also use something less permanent such as sidewalk chalk or tape. I prefer the rubber dot drill mats because they have better grip and are…
