Butterfly Passing is a great drill to work on passing fundamentals with youngsters, and to iron out technical “wrinkles” in more experienced players. Although the drill itself is simple, players should use this drill as an opportunity to work on passing accuracy in stride, and should focus on precise execution at full speed. Here’s the diagram:
Butterfly Passing Drill:
1. Two lines at one end, the width of the goal posts
2. Players skate in pairings all the way down the ice, passing back and forth while maintaining stride
3. At far end, players peel off, around the bottom of each’s respective circle, then skate back making cross-ice passes back into the zone they started from
I call this the Hymas Square Drill (or the Wag the Dog Drill – since Hymas is one of those players who loves to give input). Either way, this is a great, quick-paced, heads up passing drill. As always, click here for the printout.

The “3 Pass and Shot Drill” is a great Hockey Drill that can be utilized in many different practice scenarios. I like to use it as a warm-up drill, but it can also be used to develop passing and timing concepts, or to work on one-touch passes or shooting.

The “Wiseman Drill,” named after one of my old coaches, is a great passing and timing drill (one of my favorites!). This drill incorporates many game simulation concepts such as one-touch passes, timing, support, offensive attack, and odd-man rushes. Furthermore, there are numerous variations and options you can work through with your team. So be creative, and have some fun with this one!

Synchronized Passing is a simple, yet highly effective, hockey passing drill that will help players to develop their ability to maintain proper hockey passing technique while in motion. Players should be taught to incorporate their weight transfer into their stride while giving and receiving passes. This will help them to “cushion and sweep” their passes properly.
Start with your players very close to each other. As their skill level improves, increase the distance between each partnership, and the speed at which they skate down the ice. Players should eventually be able to execute this drill at top speed, making stick-to-stick passes all the way down the ice!
